Student Literacy Arts Recognition Project

Illinois students in Grades 1 - 12 are invited to participate in this project. The Alpha Tau Chapter (Macoupin County) of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International is encouraging you to have your students participate in our Student Literacy Project where students' writings will be displayed at our annual DKGILSO convention to be held in Oakbrook, Illinois April 21-23, 2023. The topics chosen for this year and directions for participating are below. Some suggestions are listed as starters, but you may have your own suggestions for the students on the topics:

Grades 1-4 Kindness (One page handwritten)
  • Tell about a time someone showed you kindness. How did that feel?
  • Tell about ways you can show kindness to your family or a friend.
  • Tell about people who have taught you about kindness. Why is that important?

Grades 5-8 Bullying (2 pages handwritten or 1 page computer generated and double-spaced)
  • Tell about a time you or a friend were bullied. How did that feel?
  • Tell about a time you and a friend bullied someone. What might you have done instead?
  • What do you know about online bullying? What is a good way to handle online bullying?

Grades 9-12 Gun Safety (2 pages typed and double-spaced)
  • What is the difference between what our founding fathers were probably thinking about having guns and owning guns today?
  • What do you think about the sale of AR 15 weaponry? What kinds of laws do you think are necessary to ensure public safety? What would you say in a letter to your congressman about these issues?
  • How do recent school and/or other public shootings make you feel? What thoughts do you have each day as you go to school? What safety steps should be taken to make students feel safe?

Students must handwrite or computer generate their original work in the classroom under the supervision of the teacher. Computer Font and size suggested are TACOMA, ROCKWELL OR ARIEL using l2 or 14 Font. It is important to note that this is not a competition, rather an invitation to participate in personal writing. All classrooms participating will receive a letter of appreciation from the Literacy Committee following the convention.
Students whose work is selected for display at the convention will receive a Certificate of Recognition. Students may also expect that teachers attending the convention may provide feedback by making encouraging comments to be included when the projects are returned to the classroom teacher.

Teachers are encouraged to display student work in their classrooms after the projects are returned.
Teachers are also asked to provide a list of every student who completed the writing task so that these students may be congratulated for participating.

As a participating teacher, you are asked to select no more than three (3) literacy works per classroom to submit for display during the convention. You may wish to ask a colleague to assist you in this selection. You will need to attach a parent permission form to each submission. A chapter representative will bring the works to the convention and also be responsible for picking up the works at the conclusion of the convention to be returned to the students. The time element is short for this project. The submissions must be to the chapter representative by February l 0, 2023.
